A Healthy Future
Recently, a 2 year old girl came into the care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety (ADCS) after it was determined that she was in a dangerous home environment. She had a tracheostomy due to a medical condition. When children are taken into State care, they are immediately provided medical coverage through a fast track determination process. As a result she was provided AHCCCS’, Comprehensive Medical and Dental Plan (CMDP). To ensure that the child’s medical needs were met and to identify other potential issues, the DCS Specialist took the child to the Emergency Department (ED) to be assessed. It was determined the child was stable and did not need to be admitted. Due to the special needs of the child, a potential caregiver would require training to care for the tracheostomy. In these types of situations it typically takes a little longer to find an appropriate placement. The little girl was transferred to Los Ninos, a children’s hospital in Phoenix, where she would be in a more sustainable setting for a potential placement to be trained to perform the tracheostomy care. Handling this case in this way allowed for a more viable setting for the child and a comfortable place for caregivers to train and bond with the child. Within a week, a placement was found that would address the child’s medical, emotional and daily needs. She was released from Los Ninos and looks towards a healthy future.
