PHOENIX (October 15, 2015) – On October 14th, 2015, the Department of Child Safety (DCS) and the Phoenix Police Department conducted a joint investigation into the death of five-month-old, Will'lae Porter. This is an ongoing law enforcement investigation and the cause and manner of death are not yet determined.
DCS has prior history with the involved parties. In fact, on May 21st, 2015, DCS removed Will'lae from his parent's custody and filed a dependency petition with the juvenile court. He was placed into a foster home. Will'lae became a dependent ward of the court on June 2nd, 2015. On September 17th, 2015, the court ordered a change of physical custody and Will'lae was placed with a significant party identified by the family. Without the knowledge or consent of DCS or the court, this significant party returned Will'lae to his parents. Will'lae was found deceased with his parents.
"The death of any child is heartbreaking, the death of a child in our legal care is even more painful," said DCS Director Greg McKay. "DCS protected this baby. We are angered and saddened that someone entrusted to his care placed him back in harm's way against all orders."
The Phoenix Police Department's investigation into this death is ongoing. McKay concluded, "We are committed to supporting the detectives in their efforts. We will provide additional information as it becomes known."
